Craig Hanson - Trail Upper Arm Motion

Watch the following video by Craig Hanson.

In this video, CH discusses how to move the trail arm in the downswing.

I have repeatedly talked about the importance of an active trail upper arm adduction maneuver using a pitch elbow motion, but I have never seen online golf instructors discuss this topic. I am happy to discover this CH-video where he shows how important it is to actively adduct the trail upper arm towards the trail side of the body while keeping the trail elbow bent. Craig does a very good job explaining why it is important to perform an active trail upper arm adduction maneuver (using a pitch elbow motion) during the early-mid downswing.

In the video, CH shows how to do an active trail upper arm adduction maneuver - watch the video between the 6:04 - 6:40 minute time point of the video where he shows a drill.

Here are capture images of that drill (see images 1 and 2).

Image 1 shows him at the P6 position. Most importantly, note that his trail forearm is very supinated and that his "true" palm area (interdigital area + hypothenar area of the trail palm) is partially under, and partially behind, the club handle and it is not facing groundwards.

Image 2 is at his P6.5 position. Note that his traill forearm is still supinated and that his "true" palm area is still partially under, and partially behind, the club handle and it is not facing groundwards. Note that he has an intact LFFW at P6 and also at P6.5 (where his clubshaft is straight-line-aligned with his lead forearm's lower radial bone) and note that he still has to perform his PA#3 release action. Most importantly, note that his "true" trail palm area is continuously parallel to his intact LFFW.

CH is performing his intact LFFW swing technique perfectly between P4 => P7 and he has his RFFW correctly aligned relative to his intact LFFW so that his trail palm (= "true" palm area) always remains parallel to his intact LFFW.

However, CH does not really understand what he is doing so well in his "real life" golf swing action. Watch the video between the 9:20 - 9:48 minute time points where he places a cellphone in his trail hand and he demonstrates how the trail palm should face the ground. Image 3 in the above capture image shows him at the 9:28 minute time point of the video - note that his trail palm is facing groundwards and that his trail forearm is only borderline supinated. That's totally wrong and it misrepresents reality, and he does not do that in his "real life" golf swing action (as seen clearly in images 1 and 2)! It is a great pity that most golf instructors are TGM-illiterate and that they do not understand the role of the trail arm in a TGM swinging action - I think that CH would benefit greatly by understanding how the RFFW must support the intact LFFW in a pro golfer's TGM swinging action (lead arm swinging action). CH has a superb golf swing action and he uses the intact LFFW swing technique between P4 => P7 and he also aligns his RFFW correctly with respect to his intact LFFW - it is just such a great pity that he does not really understand what he is doing so well.
